Woodville Walking School Bus

WHAT IS A “WALKING” SCHOOL BUS?
A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults, following a fixed route and stopping to pick up students at set times along the way. It is like a carpool without the “car”.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A WALKING SCHOOL BUS?
Less vehicle congestion around the school building. Help avoid traffic jams and also help the environment.
Staying fit – for both children and adults.
Talk and connect with your child(ren) and neighbors.
Great way to get you going in the morning!

The Wakefield Climate Action Project and School Health Leadership Team have partnered with MassRIDES for this effort. Ideally three parents lead the group, with one being an alternate in case one of the lead parents cannot make it.

Parents can walk or drive their children to one of the stops along the way and join the walk or hand off their child(ren) to the leaders. Leaders are CORI checked and parents must fill out permission slips. More stops can be added as people join. Information will be sent home when routes have been established.

LEADERS NEEDED!
If you enjoy morning walks, good company and avoiding traffic jams, and are willing to lead a bus in your neighborhood, please contact Mr. Middleton-Cox at middleton-cox@wakefield.k12.ma.us or (781) 246-6469. The goal will be to start our Walking School Bus during the month of March.

Book Fair Information

Dear Woodville Community,
As we prepare for the annual Book Fair, I want to share with you some reasons why we chose BookEnds over Scholastic this year. The most important reason is that we are not able to receive the Scholastic Buy One Get One (BOGO) unless we host two fairs (the first fair is needs to be full-priced). In response to this, the committee has ensured that there will be lower priced books available. Additional reasons are as follows:

BOOKENDS

PROS
· Woodville earns a percentage of all sales – the higher the sales, the bigger the percentage
· Woodville receives books of our choosing based on % of sales
· We are supporting a local business
· BookEnds sets up and breaks down everything
· BookEnds provides an automated sales system via laptops with scanners
· Books are organized by type on moveable carts provided by BookEnds. Covers for the carts are also included for covering.
· If we run out of any books during the day, BookEnds delivers additional copies the following day
· Less volunteers required due to process of Book Fair by bookends
· BookEnds provides all forms for ease of ordering, follow-ups, sales tracking etc.
· No junky toys, non-educational toys, collectibles

CONS
· No BOGO
·
Expensive books (we have requested they remove these this year and have added additional lower priced books)

SCHOLASTIC

PROS
· BOGO*

CONS
· *In order to qualify for the BOGO, Woodville is required to host two fairs. Of these two fairs the first is all full-priced and the second is the BOGO
· Scholastic will not work with us if we host only one fair
· We do not have the manpower with volunteers for two fairs
· Scholastic drops books off – Woodville needs to provide locations for books. They do not set up fair, which require more help from volunteers
· The school does not receive any percentage of sales (either books or money) If we run out of any books throughout the fair, there is no way to get additional ones.
· Non-quality, non-educational merchandise (toys, collectibles) is provided which leads to many students being upset if they do not get any (and we can not reorder)
· All sales need to be tallied and tracked manually which also requires additional manpower

Thank you so much for supporting the Woodville School through our Book Fair. The Book Fair dates are March 8-12.
Mr. Middleton-Cox

Kindergarten Registration Information

February 2010

Dear Parents of Incoming Kindergarten Children,

Kindergarten registration for the Wakefield Public Schools for September 2010 will take
place during the week of February 23 – February 26, 2010. On the reverse side of this letter,
you will find the school to which your child is assigned and registration periods for your
child’s school. Kindergarten Screening will take place at your child’s neighborhood school
during the week of March 15. Additional information on screening will be available when
you register your child. If you are interested in the All Day Kindergarten Program,
applications will be available at the screening. The current rate for All Day Kindergarten is
$3600 and is subject to review and/or change by vote of the School Committee at a future
date.

If you are unable to register your child on any of these dates, please contact the school office
at your earliest convenience. If, for any reason, you do not plan to enroll your child in the
Wakefield Public Schools Kindergarten program this coming September, please notify your
child’s neighborhood school either by telephone or by mail. If you know of families new to
your neighborhood with children who are eligible to attend kindergarten who might not have
received this mailing, please encourage them to contact the school office.

In accordance with School Committee Policy, children being registered for kindergarten must
be five (5) years of age on or before August 31, 2010. Please complete the enclosed forms
and please be sure to bring your child’s original birth certificate, as well as a copy to be left
with your registration form. You will also need proof of residency such as a telephone bill or
utility bill. Please refer to the enclosed sheet specifying the necessary health information that
must be on record before your child attends kindergarten in September 2010.
We look forward to working with you on behalf of your child(ren).

Sincerely,

Helping the Wakefield Community

The students at the Woodville School participated in a toiletry drive this week and our fourth grade students created care packages complete with toiletries, candy, personal cards and letters for the elderly and challenged citizens of Wakefield for Valentines Day. This is a statement of our commitment to the Wakefield community with the support of the Community Benefit Committee (CBC) of our PTO, led by Mrs. Cathie Murdocca.

Love Is In the Air!

Happy Valentine's Day! Students in Miss Martin's class celebrated Valentine's Day with a very festive classroom!

This Week's Principal's Award

This week’s winner is Kelly from 4B. Kelly is a hard working student who comes to school everyday with a positive attitude. She is always cheerful and makes the classroom a pleasant environment for her peers. Kelly may not always get every assignment 100% correct, but she always puts in 100% effort. She is determined to be the best person she can be and consistently demonstrates the Woodville School Core values both in and out of school. Kelly has been with Mr. Bouchard for two years at the Woodville School and she has been a pleasure to work with and have fun with in class.

More Images from the 100th Day

Students in Ms. Martin's and Mrs. Greatorex's kindergarten classes celebrated the 100th day of school today with many fun activities.

President's Day Show

The second grade students performed a President's Day show today which informed the student body about facts from the lives of President Washington, President Lincoln, and President Obama. They also recited poetry and sang songs. Below are two video clips and a picture.

It's the 100th Day of School!

Students in Ms. Bedrick's second grade class and Mrs. Campbell's kindergarten class were busy on this 100th day of school. Ms. Bedrick's students were doing creative writing describing what they would do with 100 dollars, 100 friends, 100 legs, etc. Mrs. Campbell's students were building with 100 blocks, making necklaces with 100 beads and stamping a paper with 100 stamps. This helps the students count to 100 in groups of 10.

Message About Bullying

February 4, 2010

Dear Parent or Guardian,

As many of you are aware, bullying is a national problem facing all children in the country. The Wakefield Public Schools takes incidents of bullying seriously. Bullying among children and youth is more common than many adults realize. Studies show that between 15-25% of American students are bullied with some frequency. Incidents of bullying can lead to severe depression in children. The safety and emotional well being of your child is of the utmost importance to us.

Some of the signs of Bullying you should look for:
· coming home from school with torn or disheveled clothing, with damaged books
· having bruises, injuries, cuts, and scratches that cannot be given a natural explanation
· not wanting to go to school and finding excuses to stay at home (for example, feeling sick, repeated headaches or stomach pains particularly in the morning)
· wanting to go to school a different way to avoid the children who are bullying them, choosing an illogical route
· being very tense, tearful and unhappy after school
· talking about hating school or not having any friends
· refusing to tell you what happens at school
· not bringing classmates or other peers home after school and seldom spending time in the homes of others
· not having a single good friend to share free time with (playing, shopping, sports and musical events, chatting on the phone, etc.)
· rarely being invited to parties and may not be interested in arranging parties themselves (because they expect nobody wants to come)
· exhibiting restless sleep with bad dreams, crying in their sleep
· losing interest in school work and getting lower grades
· appearing unhappy, sad, depressed, or showing unexpected mood shifts with irritability and sudden outbursts of temper
· requesting or stealing extra money from family (to accommodate the bullies)

These signs may not necessarily mean your child is being bullied, however if present, you should have a conversation with your child. It is also important for you to have a conversation with your child about telling an adult if they know of another child being bullied.

In the meantime, parents should know that the Wakefield Public Schools takes bullying seriously and we are committed to continually reviewing its policies and practices in respect to bullying and harassment. Bullying seriously affects the lives of others. Through the cooperation of the Wakefield Community, we can address this serious issue affecting all of us.

Sincerely,

Joan Landers
Superintendent of Schools

This Week's Principal's Award Winner

This week’s winner is Caroline from Miss Martin’s Kindergarten class. Caroline consistently demonstrates all of the Woodville School's Core Values. She is always respectful and kind to everyone taking time to give a nice gesture, whether it is a smile or an extra thank you or even making a card to give to someone who has been sick or just having a bad day. Caroline is always responsible. She is the student the teacher can always count on to listen and follow directions and to make sure that her table is cleaned up and everything is away. If she finishes her clean up, she will look around to help one of her friends. Caroline is an outstanding kindergarten student.

Groundhog Sees his Shadow

Punxsutawney Phil has emerged to see his shadow before chilly revelers in Pennsylvania, meaning winter will last another six weeks. In the Woodville School, there is a creative wall adornment to educate our students on today's current news.
