Cooperation Assembly

Today we had our November school-wide assembly on Cooperation. Our second grade students shared a folktale by Alexei Tolstoy called The Great Big Enormous Turnip which is a folktale about cooperation. In addition I read a book by Stan and Jan Berenstain called Berenstain Bears Get in a Fight which illustrates how to work together cooperatively.

Students were taught that to be cooperative means to: listen, share, take turns, compromise, do your part, show appreciation, encourage people, make people feel needed, and not to isolate or exlude anyone.

News from Mrs. Crispo, RN

Initial state mandated vision and hearing screening for grades K-4 started at Woodville on November 18th and will continue after the Thanksgiving break. Kindergartners are tested for hearing only while grades 1-4 are tested for vision, steriopsis or muscle balance, and hearing. Your children will be screened by experienced state trained nurses.
Any child experiencing difficulty with either test will then be referred to me and I will retest them in that category. Only those failing both the test and the retest will be referred for medical evaluation via letters to the parents specifying the areas of failure. You will not be notified if your child passes all areas. If your child uses glasses at school please remind him/her to have them available.
We try to make the screening a fun process, and, in fact, many of the older students now look forward to it!

This Week's Principal's Award Winner

This week’s Principal’s Award Winner is Drew in Miss Martin’s Kindergarten Class. He always comes to school excited and ready to learn. He comes in everyday with a smile for everyone in the room. If someone has been absent he asks them if they are feeling better and always stops to help his friends and teachers pick things up. Drew is an outstanding listener and we can always count on him to follow directions. He puts great effort into everything he does. Drew is a wonderful example of someone who understands and follows all of the Woodville School's Core Values. He is an absolute joy to have in class. We are very proud of him.

This Week's Staff Spotlight

Lauren Ross, School Psychologist
Mrs. Lauren Ross, formerly Holmes, is in her second year in Wakefield and fifth-year working in a public school setting as a school psychologist. Her previous school experiences were in the towns of Concord, Duxbury, and Belmont. Mrs. Ross also worked at Massachusetts General Hospital conducting clinical interviews and did neuropsychological evaluations for research on pediatric bipolar disorder, ADHD, and anxiety.

Mrs. Ross grew up on the South Shore of Massachusetts, and now lives with her husband near Fenway Park. Outside of supporting kids and families, her other true passion is food. She loves cooking, trying all types of restaurants, and experiencing other cultures through food. This is quite a passion for her, considering how picky of an eater she was as a child!

Bullying Theater Presentation

Today our students in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade were treated to Deana's Educational Theater's performance of "All Starz." This was an interactive, three-character play dealing with issues of bullying and respect. Students witnessed the verbal, non-verbal and physical behavior that reflects episodes of real life bullying in schools. Students also observed positive role modeling when the characters worked together to come to an awareness about respecting all people. Many thanks to our Woodville PTO for generously funding this experience for our children.
