Magazine Recycling Drive
To support our school's core value on RESPONSIBILITY, students have been collecting magazines and bringing them into our recycling dumpster on Mondays. We have already collected over 1,850 magazines in 2 weeks. Student Ian, a 3rd grader at Woodville School, decided to collect old magazines from his whole neighborhood and his own attic and he donated 1,175 magazines this week!!!!

Honoring a Local Hero

As we being to prepare for Memorial Day on May 30th, it is a time to reflect on the courage and bravery that so many Americans have had over the years to protect our great land and our freedom. One such individual, John A. Benedetto, (little Benny), was born and raised here in Wakefield. He attended the Woodville School (which looked much different in the 1930s when Benny attended).
He attended school at the Woodville, like a lot of our neighbors on the east side of Wakefield. During World War II, he, like a lot of other local youths, joined the Army to defend our country, and gave his life to that endeavor. He served in the US Army during World War II, and was assigned to Company 1 in the 141st Infantry the 36th Texas Division. He died proudly serving our country on August 26th, 1944.
His family donated his flag received from the President of the United States after his death, to be displayed at the new Woodville School, to honor all of our towns veterans who gave their lives defending our country during World War II. We now have a picture of Mr. Benedetto so that all who walk through our school's doors will remember his bravery.

Grade 2 Living Wax Museum
Our Grade 2 students did a great job on their Living Wax Museum today. They each researched a famous American and became that character. I was so pleased to see their great costumes and hear the wonderful research they did.
SmartBoard
Mr. Verge recently had a SmartBoard installed in his 3rd grade classroom and he and the students are learning how to use it. On today's visit, the students were doing math problems on the board. I look forward to seeing more interactive lessons.
Are You Smarter Than a 4th Grader?
Students in Mrs. Ferguson's 4th grade class played a math game against parents called "Are You Smarter Than a 4th Grader?" The kids and parents had a great time!
Magazine Drive
This past Monday, we collected 203 magazines to recycle in our magazine drive. Let’s try to beat that number next week. Bring in any magazines you don’t need any more for us to recycle! This shows all of our core values!
Jump Rope for Heart
Congratulations to the Woodville Community for raising over $8,000 for the American Red Cross through our Jump Rope for Heart event. This really shows our core value of CARING! Many thanks to Mr. Feldman for organizing the event.
This Week's Principal's Award Winner
This week’s Principal’s Award Winner is Isabella in Mrs. Siafakas’ third grade class. Izzy is a very enthusiastic student who is trying very hard to complete tasks with more independence. She absolutely loves to read and would prefer to have a book in her hand than a pencil. She has learned many self monitoring techniques to help her become a successful student. Her teacher LOVES seeing her bright smile and her attempts to interact with her peers. She is a wonderful asset to the classroom, and her teacher feels very fortunate to have her in class. She is a bright star and her teacher hopes all other children and teachers recognize her for the wonderful person she is.

Carla Musto, Paraprofessional
Carla Musto has been a paraprofessional at the Woodville School for three years. She is 26 years old and has been living in Wakefield all her life. She loves working with kids and she is working toward the next steps to go back to school for her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood education. She loves adventure and is an outgoing person and tries to live each day to its fullest.

This Week's Principal's Award
This week’s Principal’s Award Winner is Hanna in Mrs. Ryan’s second grade class. Hanna exhibits the core values of the Woodville School every day. Her teacher is especially pleased with the way Hanna has taken on roles for Literature Circles during reading time. She demonstrates responsibility every day by getting the materials she and her group members need. Hanna cooperates with the other children as they choose their jobs for the chapter they are reading. She is a caring and respectful member of the group as everyone presents their information during Literature Circle time. Hanna listens carefully and adds her ideas in a kind and thoughtful manner. Hanna is very deserving of the Principal’s Award.

Mrs. McCarthy has been at Woodville since Sept 2010 and within Wakefield schools since Sept 2009. She has a Bachelor’s Degree from Salem State University in Sociology. She is currently taking classes from Cambridge College to earn a Master’s Degree in Education. She lives in Reading with her husband, Arty and three kids, Tim, Mike and Kate. She enjoys spending time with her family. She also enjoys skiing, playing tennis, and working with children.

Math MCAS
The Math MCAS will be next week for our 3rd graders and the following week for our 4th graders. Some tips to remember to keep in mind are:
• Eat a nutritious breakfast. A healthy breakfast that is high in protein and carbohydrates will help to sustain energy and concentration.
• Get a good night’s sleep. Children need a minimum of eight hours sleep a night to remain alert and energetic. Many need more. Develop consistent routines that establish good sleep habits
• Foster confidence and a positive attitude. Allow enough time getting ready for school in the morning to avoid rushing and confusion. Pack backpacks and belongings the night before to ensure that your child is calm, organized and has everything that they need. To minimize stress simply encourage your child to “try their best” and express your confidence that they will do well.
Please make every effort to have your child attend school on the day of his/her MCAS tests. Thank You!

Caring Assembly
Our monthly theme this month for our core values assembly was CARING. I read My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig. Students identified areas of caring throughout the book. Then, students were recognized for exhibiting the value of caring from the past month.
